Praise God - Voice message transcripts in WhatsApp

Admittedly, I belong to the generation that hates voice messages in WhatsApp. Whenever one arrives, I'm encouraged to delete it straight away. But what can you do? So I listen to it from time to time and then - as I should want - respond to it in writing.

But that is now - to some extent - a thing of the past. I've only just found something that is available since November 2024: Voice Message Transcripts in WhatsApp. With a small setting and 1-2 taps afterwards, your Smartphone is able to convert spoken words into readable text, which is almost better than sex.

All you have to do is activate a setting:
Settings > Chats > Voice message transcripts

The received voice messages are then converted directly on your smartphone. According to their own statement, no one else can listen/read.

I tried this out yesterday with one of these voice messages. And what can I say? Siri transcribed it into something similar to the voice messages I know from my own recorded voice messages for the Notes app: Meh. I was able to recognize what my counterpart was basically trying to tell me, but it wasn't always really great or meaningful.

Now I have the suspicion that, with the AI activation in Siri on my iPhone, the transcription could improve. But that remains to be seen.

On that note, if you are like me and missed the WhatsApp announcement, you're welcome. Here is the solution for everyone's use case: No one needs to know what nonsense you're listening to when you're on the toilet.

Tell me what you think about this
